Tukey (Francis) is born in Portland, Maine.

1814

Francis Tukey graduates from Harvard Law School, and is appointed City Marshal in 1846. He establishes a five-member detective squad, the first detective squad of any police department in the U.S. Tukey’s aggressive approach to law enforcement prompts the Bunker Hill Aurora to call him “A terror to evildoers and some who were not evildoers.” He is replaced in February 1853, and subsequently leaves Boston to continue his career in California.
